RuneScape: Dragonwilds Roadmap: 2026 Updates & Luminance
The RuneScape Dragonwilds roadmap runs on monthly updates: the winter Luminance update adds the Prayer skill, and 2027 starts the Blood Crystal Saga.
RuneScape: Dragonwilds keeps a monthly update cadence now that 1.0 is out, and the next headline release is a free winter 2026 update called Luminance that adds the Prayer skill. After that, 2027 opens a new story chapter named the Blood Crystal Saga. Everything on this page is what Jagex has actually confirmed — where an item rests on a single source, it is marked.
Note the scope: this roadmap is for the standalone co-op survival game Dragonwilds. The RuneScape MMO and Old School RuneScape run their own separate update schedules.
Confirmed roadmap at a glance
| Timeframe | Update | Contents |
|---|---|---|
| October 2026 | Minor update | New quests, quest tab improvements, new activities, expanded enemy variety, bug fixes (single source — official Wiki) |
| November 2026 | Minor update | New quests, new activities, bug fixes (single source — official Wiki) |
| December 2026 | Winter update: Luminance | New skill: Prayer, new material, new quests, new activities, new Vestiges (single source), Secure Servers (single source), new building kit |
| 2027 | Shadows of Ashenfall | New saga: Blood Crystal Saga, new skills, new world difficulty: Hardcore (single source — official Wiki) |
The Luminance name is corroborated by Jagex itself: the studio's September 2026 announcement names it as "our next Update in the coming Winter", and confirms it is free "much like the minor updates". The Blood Crystal Saga name comes from the official 1.0 update video.
Minor updates vs major updates
The official Wiki splits the roadmap into two shapes, and the difference matters when you are reading patch notes. Minor updates are built mainly from new secondary quests, skilling and exploration activities, and bug fixes; they can also include UI improvements and expansions of existing content, and in some cases a new skill. Major updates expand the continent of Ashenfall with one or more new regions, new primary and secondary quests, a raised material progression ceiling, and new Vestige or Masterwork gear. Both definitions are single source — the official Wiki's roadmap page.

Luminance: the winter 2026 major update
Jagex's own words on the winter update are short and specific: it introduces the Prayer skill, companions it with a new material tier, brings new characters, uncovers "a growing conflict", and hands players an all-new building kit. The official Wiki's roadmap table adds new quests, new activities, new Vestiges and "Secure Servers" to that list, which is why those two items are flagged as single source here. No specific December date has been published.
2027: the Blood Crystal Saga
At the end of the 1.0 update video, Jagex gives the next chapter a name and nothing else: the Blood Crystal Saga. The same video describes what to expect from it in general terms — new skills, quests, regions, bosses, enemies and rewards as the story moves into an unexplored stretch of the Sixth Age. The official Wiki roadmap also lists a new world difficulty, Hardcore, for 2027, marked there as single source.
Shadows of Ashenfall: the longer game
"Shadows of Ashenfall" first appears in Jagex's June 2025 vision post, where the studio describes it as a codename for something bigger it was exploring: larger worlds, higher player counts, new ways to engage with dragons, and a heavier focus on social play, trade and sandbox fun. It has not been given a release window, and the later roadmap artwork places it outside the dated 2026 schedule. Treat it as the studio's stated direction rather than a scheduled release.
RuneFest 2026 is where 2027 gets revealed
RuneFest returns on 3 to 4 October 2026 at the NEC in Birmingham, and Jagex has said the Summit there will cover its 2027 plans and the next Saga in Ashenfall's story. If you are tracking the roadmap closely, that weekend is the single date worth circling. The official Wiki's "other" table lists the same October window for the event.
How the cadence has changed since Early Access
During Early Access Jagex committed to a slower rhythm — the studio's stated mantra was "Meaningful Content Every Quarter" — and delivered the schedule below before 1.0 closed Kuldra's Saga on 15 September 2026. After launch the promise changed shape to monthly updates, which is what the current roadmap reflects.
| Delivered during Early Access | Window | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Fellhollow | December 2025 | First major expansion |
| Dowdun Reach | March 2026 | Major region update |
| Umbral Sands | June 2026 | Major region update, described as the largest to date |
| Scorned Wilderness | 15 September 2026 | Shipped with 1.0, closing the saga |
Older roadmap versions from 2025 and early 2026 are archived on the official Wiki as historical images (single source).

A community breakdown of the published 2027 roadmap artwork notes at least two further updates marked only with question marks, alongside a teaser panel that appears to point at a saga beyond Blood Crystal (single source — community video). Jagex has not named them; that is exactly the kind of gap RuneFest is expected to fill.
