RuneScape: Dragonwilds Rune Essence

RuneScape Dragonwilds rune essence: how to farm vents and Rocksplosion, the conversion spell bug, and what essence is for - lodestones, powder and potions.

Keyword: runescape dragonwilds rune essenceUpdated: 2026-10-156 sources

Short answer: farm rune essence by mining (or Rocksplosion-ing) the essence vents - a full vent pays 1,500-2,100 - and spend it on lodestones for fast travel, powder for endgame crafting recipes, and potion fuel. The rune-conversion spell exists but its payout is bugged for some players, so do not rely on it.

Rune essence is the resource Dragonwilds keeps asking for at every mid-game checkpoint: movement, crafting and potions all pull from the same pile, which is why "best way to farm rune essence" is one of the game's most-asked questions. This page collects the farming routes and the uses, from the community discussions linked in the sources.

How to farm it

MethodYieldNotes
Mine essence vents/rocksA whole vent ≈ 1,500-2,100 essenceThe default route; bring pickup capacity
Rocksplosion the vents~300 Mining XP per essence destroyedThe XP-efficient route - materials and skill gains in one pass
"Runes to Rune Essence" spellSupposedly 40% of runes convertedBugged for some players: reports of ~4% actual payout (1,086 nature runes → 43 essence)

The conversion spell looks convenient and mostly is not. Until the payout matches its tooltip, the community advice is to treat it as a last resort and get your essence from vents. (community-sourced bug reports)

What to spend it on

  • Lodestones. Rune essence + stone crafts lodestones, the game's fast-travel markers. Carrying a stack into a new area - the standard advice for the swamp's difficulty spike - lets you drop a travel network as you push forward, so deaths and supply runs stop costing the whole walk back. (community-sourced)
  • Powder recipes. Grind essence into rune essence powder and it enters the mid-game crafting chains: rune essence powder + black dragon hide + dragon essence = black dragon leather, plus vis fibres, vis cloth and vis wax for the alchemy cauldron. (community-sourced)
  • Potions. Essence is a fuel for making strong potions, so it stays in demand after the crafting milestones are done. (community-sourced)

The weight problem

Rune essence is heavy - 1.5 per unit - which is exactly why a full 2,000-essence vent haul overloads you. There is a Runecrafting perk that reduces the weight by 50% (to ~0.7 per unit), but players have reported it not applying at times, so weigh your return trips accordingly. (community-sourced)

One more caution from the bug reports: the October 2026 spell-bug thread describes converted runes being outright deleted, with a save-file workaround in the replies. If a conversion goes visibly wrong, check the linked thread before assuming the essence is gone. Farming vents avoids that class of bug entirely.

FAQ

How do you get rune essence in Dragonwilds?
Three ways players use: mine the rune essence vents and rocks (a whole vent yields roughly 1,500-2,100), blow the vents with Rocksplosion, or cast "Runes to Rune Essence" to convert runes you already have. (community-sourced)
What is rune essence used for?
Crafting lodestones for fast-travel points, grinding into rune essence powder for mid-game recipes (black dragon leather, vis fibres, vis cloth, vis wax), and fuelling strong potions. (community-sourced)
Does the Runes to Rune Essence spell give 40%?
The spell text says 40%, but players have repeatedly reported receiving far less - one converted 1,086 nature runes and got 43 essence back, which reads like a 4% payout. Treat the spell as unreliable until a patch note says otherwise. (community-sourced bug report)
What is the fastest way to level Mining with rune essence?
Blowing up rune essence with Rocksplosion - players report roughly 300 Mining XP per essence destroyed, making vent farming a double win of materials and XP. (community-sourced, single source)
Why is rune essence so heavy?
It weighs 1.5 per unit, and a Runecrafting perk supposedly halves that to about 0.7 - though players have reported the weight reduction not applying. (community-sourced)
